Many times I ask people if they exercise regularly, I receive the response like, “I don’t have time”. Most of the people do not have time, but still, have time to get bored. Boredom is a word becoming popular in society.

In today’s era, people have many things which can keep them busy in their lives, which a couple of decades ago were thought impossible to have.

Smartphones, internet facilities, the latest smart TVs, and many other gadgets are available. People use these devices extremely.  How much a person at an average spends time on screen will terrify you.

Almost every person in the corporate world has to use either computer or smartphone for their day-to-day business.

Overwhelming situation in the information world

Though information is available on the internet for everyone, people get benefit from shared information and experiences from individuals around the world, too much use of digital information keeps them away from physical activities.

Interacting with people around the world has become so easy that it was not possible a couple of decades ago. Computer and internet have transformed the way we used to make friends and get to know each other. There is no boundary to get in touch with old school friends or make new interactions within a couple of clicks. Social media has become common and some people use it excessively on a daily basis.

Everybody wants to know everything, regardless if that information is useful or not. While digital technology has brought so many benefits, it has carried many adverse effects on human life too.

In spite of having all entertainment sources available, why do people get bored?

Why people get bored?

Boredom hits when a person says to subconscious mind that I want to do something more important than what I am doing right now. It is an emotional and psychological state when a person thinks there is nothing to do, not interested in doing certain activities or feels dreary.

If a person is not satisfied with the present activity, searches for more engaging and passionate things to do in life, he or she gets bored. Numerous times it is true because, the record of the time we spent watching TV, online shows, playing online games, drifting on social media, surfing irrelevant information on internet, or just searching for fun, is huge. The mind keeps wandering what to do next. Sometimes we get pleasure out of these activities, but it is temporary.

Short term pleasure VS long term happiness

We misinterpret our pleasure time with happiness. We temporarily fulfill our desires spending time on TV, the internet, social media, playing games, etc. But still, our mind keeps roaming in search of happiness. This is a cycle and it will never end unless a person decides to learn how to get rid of this loop. To get real happiness we need to put some effort. Change in our lifestyle, the way we access the information, and whether it is useful in the current time, is necessary.

How to get rid of boredom?

Adjustments in daily routine can help a person live a happy and successful life.

In this blog, I will give some significant ideas, if a person includes in daily routine, he or she can live a joyful life and get rid of boredom.

Try your power of positive thinking

Negative thinking can push a person to stress, anxiety, or depression. If “I am getting bored”, this sentence repeated often, it can lead a person to depression. With positive thinking, you can make things easy to achieve. Things that otherwise were seemingly impossible can become possible. Believe you can get rid of the dreariness, and you will.

“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.”

― Norman Vincent Peale

Search for a unique skill in yourself

Search for a unique talent, a skill that can make you proud. Finding your element can be challenging. But with regular monitoring what interest you the best and what you are good at can help you practice and get the best result out of your skills. Don’t put pressure on yourself to find your element right now, instead, allow yourself to explore your true potentials.

When you get healthier results, your inspiration is high to achieve more. Some people get joy in cooking, painting, music, singing, or reading books, etc. If you are interested in cooking, try different recipes. Try new experiments to know what you are good at.

When you get a job that you love, you do not need to work anymore, your work becomes your passion. Your attention is at a peak and your mind is always present in the moment. Thus, there is no place in cognizance to get bored.

“God, our Creator, has stored within our minds and personalities, great potential strength and ability. Prayer helps us tap and develop these powers.”

– A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Try to learn something new

It can be anything, from learning a new language, skill, or just know how to paint. Engage yourself in learning what you think more meaningful for yourself. Learn by experimenting it. Try various methods to achieve good results. Use different tools and learn how to use them. Learning new things is fun, it will keep you away from boredom.

Social engagement

Meeting people can help us get rid of boredom swiftly. Do not misread meeting people with online meeting. Meet people in the office, at a restaurant, coffee shops, or at the park. Social engagement is the biggest antidote for dispersion. Invest your time in your family members, friends, and relatives.

Social engagement gives you a sense of being part of society and the wisdom of being in the right place. For some reason, if you have lost connection with your loved ones, accept responsibility and progress small steps forward to re-build it. It will help you in the long run to kill your boredom.

Read books

Reading develops our thoughts, give us endless knowledge and examples for us to learn from. Books are our best friends. Just the way we need exercise to keep our body fit, reading books can keep our mind healthy.

Remember, leaders, are readers!

If you read autobiography of successful people, you will notice that they invest their time in reading books. Know the location of your library well, develop an interest in book reading. Remember, book is the best form of entertainment, it can get you out of boredom.

Reading is one of my favorite hobbies. I can invest hours in reading without getting fed up. If you have a book in your hand, boredom can never touch you.

“If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books.”

– Roald Dahl

Meditate

Learning how to meditate will not only give you control over your thought focus, it will also inject long-lasting benefits in your life. It lowers the blood pressure, keeps your thoughts in control, and preserve you in now moment. There are many health benefits from meditation, some of them are listed below

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Less anxiety
  • Lower blood cortisol levels
  • More feelings of well-being
  • Less stress
  • Deeper relaxation

Next time when you think you are getting bored, meditate and get rid of boredom.

Daily physical exercise

Regular exercise helps generating hormones like Endorphins in our brain, which enhances our mood and help to boost our happiness.

Do not sit for a long time in front of a TV or on your desk at office. Recent studies show that too much sitting at your office desk is as bad as smoking.

Long sitting hours can lead to many health problems, like, obesity, joint pain, heart disease, diabetes, etc.

When you are in the office and your job is sitting all the time in front of a computer, make sure you move around every hour or at least stand-up and stretch yourself for some time. Take an opportunity to walk when you receive a call on your cell phone. In this way, you can walk while you talk.

Forty minutes to one hour daily walk keeps us active all day. Physical exercise help our mind to think critically, we get new ideas and it helps reduce our stress. Resulting, no negative thoughts appear in mind and you have no time to get bored.
